Before I picked up the microphone, I’d spent a long time working in other languages: 17 years of English, dual degrees in English and Chinese from Hanoi University, and years of interpreting for conferences and businesses. It left me with one habit I still keep on stage: understand who’s listening before you speak.
On stage, I don’t need to be the centre of attention. I’d rather keep the rhythm – so speakers are heard, guests feel respected, and the programme flows even when things change backstage.
